Baguio Moments: The Panagbenga 2009 Experience

February 27, 2009 at 10:00 pm, my friends from the office and I agreed to meet at the Pasay terminal of Victory Liner going to Baguio. At around 11:00 pm the journey starts pretty well. The ride at the bus is quite alright and fun going up north and took us for about 5 hours to go to our destination.

At around 5:30 am the next day we reached the Baguio proper and we immediately booked going back to Manila at the bus station because at that moment a lot of tourists are there to see the event. At about 7:12 am we are done buying the tickets, at last! It was a long long long line to get tickets but we enjoyed still. The parade started at that time, but we are heading to out friend’s home (Julius).

While we are walking to get a cab we saw some people joining the parade and we are all stunned with their costume.

At around 7:30 am we reached the beautiful home of Julius and his family welcomed us very warm, his mom and his dad prepared a very sumptuous soup and bread for our breakfast, it is so yummy and we can’t help but to eat more and more and more. After we eat, we took a bath with cold water which is really cold, ha ha ha luckily when it’s my turn I got hot water with Julius’ mom. By the way, the house has a lot of art works from Julius dad.

After a lot of kulitan and tawanan, we are ready to go to see some contest from the festival with Julius’ sister and nephews. After some photo shoots with the participants, we decided to go to SM and we waited for Julius to fetch us for lunch, he rented a van for us.

We had lunch in Chia’s Fastfood which offers delicious food in Baguio, the lunch was good.

Then, we now continued our journey we went to the Lion Statue which is called Lion’s Head and took some photos, then we went up again and stopped at Igorot’s place just above the Lion’s head.

Next stop at the Camp John Hay, we visited Julius father who happened to have an art exhibit in that day, we saw different beautiful art works of different artists which includes Mr. Josefino Abawag. After the appreciating the art works and the cocktails from the exhibit, next destination is the

Botanical Garden where we bought strawberry taho. Before the sun goes down we went up stairs of Lourdes Grotto which have 252 steps, so tiring. Then before we wrapped up our first day in Baguio we had our dinner in a restaurant which offers big meat porterhouse. In the evening, our other officemates decided to drink and some decided to sleep to grain energy for tomorrow’s early jogging.

March 1, 2009 at around 4:30 am some of my officemates and I woke up and prepared for the jog, some are still sleeping. After the preparation, we jog from Julius’ house to the Burnham Park, we went to wagwagan to look for some ukay-ukay after that we went straight to the overpass to have a place to see the parade at around 7:30 am, there are too many people and that place was so jam-packed.

We even bought our breakfast at mc Donalds and we have to eat them at the overpass standing at the railings (OMG) it was my first time to attend such festival, but I was so grateful to witness the event in my own eyes. The parade started at around 8:00 am and everyone is so excited to see what they have. At around 10:30 am the parade is almost done and we decided to take a rest so we went to a near park and eat some street foods.

Then we went to a church near session road then we eat lunch in a food court.

After lunch we went to Mines View Park, while going there we had our stopover in one of the known place for silvers then we head back to the park at around 1:30 pm. We stayed at Mines View until 4:00 pm then we head back to Burnham Park to meet the parents of Julius because we are about to go back to manila at 7:00 pm that day. So, we also went to the wet market to buy some pasalubong. Then we went back to manila and it was a great experience to us!

Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Abawag for the warm welcome and the food, also thanks to Julius for offering their home to us and for being a good friend and a good guide. I would love to go back to Baguio for the next Panagbenga Festival!
